February 21-27: Madness in Maine, Women's Liberation in the East
And lots of lawsuits making their way before the US Supreme Court
Calls to Action
Join a webinar that argues, from a pro-woman stance, against prostitution as labor. The webinar is organized by the Communist Party of the UK. Note that we don’t endorse any particular party here (you’ll see a range of politicians cheered and jeered in our newsletter), but we will always platform ideas that uplift women and girls.
Erasing Women and Women’s Spaces
Feb 27 - Iowa gives final approval to a bill removing gender identity protections despite protests
Hell yes! This first-of-its-kind bill goes beyond just ignoring the concept of “gender identity” in law, and it instead specifies that gender identity is not a protected class and clarifies the biologically-based definitions of “male” and “female.”
In case you needed any more reminders that at the root of “transitioning,” particularly when men and boys LARP as women and girls, are sexist, archaic, pornified ideas of what womanhood means.
Feb 24 - Federal Judge Shields More Transgender Inmates From Trump Order
According to the article, there are about 1500 trans-identifying men in federal prisons, and the judge says that the two dozen who are in women’s prisons would endure “cruel and unusual punishment” if placed in men’s prisons. How far does this logic go? Are gay, effeminate, short, or slim men all also at heightened risk of harm in men’s prisons since they, too, are targeted? Do they also need to be moved to women’s prisons?
I know I’ve asked this before, but how do these dudes have literally no shame about infiltrating women and girls’ sports? Is it because they spend so much time in echo chambers that they really believe they are stunning and brave Rosa Park-esque rebels? One representative in Maine’s legislature has even been censured for highlighting the absurdity of this issue. Meanwhile, New Hampshire has accepted Trump’s executive order barring males from female sports despite ongoing legal disputes in the state. Here’s another take by Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF)
Here we go again in Scotland, as politics have more weight than common sense. This time NHS Fife and Health Secretary Neil Gray are dismissive of nurse Sandie Peggie who objects to having to share a changing room with male medic “Beth” Upton.
If you want to be enraged by more insulting language changes in deference to gender ideology, look no further than Wisconsin. Governor Tony Evers, in a bill about sate finances, proposes dehumanizing people with language that is far more offensive than neutral.
Males in Female Sports
Feb 27 - World Boxing promises 'fair playing field' for women
Oh yeah? Unless that policy includes naming males with certain Disorders of Sexual Development (DSDs) what they are, men, the policy won’t go far enough. Recall that men like Imane Khelif and Caster Semenya aren’t claiming a trans identity, rather they are trying to convince the public that they are biologically female because they were raised female as a result of their irregularly developed genitalia at birth.
Feb 25 - Trans athletes on Trump’s executive order: ‘Stripping us of sports is devastating’
For the umpteenth time, no one is removing the ability of trans-identifying people to compete in sports. The argument is that trans people, particularly men who decide they want to LARP as women, need to compete in the category of their natal sex.
Specifically, Ms. Edwards condemns that the the club sees no issue with forcing women to share changing rooms with men skinwalking women.
Sexual Exploitation and Violence Against Women
Feb 27 - Andrew Tate and brother leave Romania for US after travel ban lifted
I partly blame law enforcement in Romania for taking so long to actually prosecute the brothers.
Feb 25 - Florida Democrats demand to know why U.S. Attorney’s Office hasn’t arrested Cory Mills
This is another case of wealthy, powerful people getting away with crimes. In this case it’s a Republican congressman accused of domestic violence.
Feb 23 - Spain smashes sex trafficking gang that exploited more than 1,000 women
More than 1000 women, mostly hailing from Venezuela and Colombia, were tricked into moving to Spain under the promise of jobs in hospitality and beauty. Instead, they were kept in lockdown and exploited in strip clubs. The disappointing thing about articles like this is that there’s rarely follow-up. What will happen to the women now? Where will they go? How much support will go into ensuring their health and helping them find stability?
Feb 22 - Hooters preparing to file bankruptcy after shuttering dozens of stores in 2024, report says
I want to say this is good news, but the truth is that sometimes stories like these are brought by companies to the media to increase public interest in the brand again.
Reproductive Rights
Feb 27 - US congresswoman votes with baby in arms after proxy vote ban
This one hits close to home as a mom who had to go back to work just six weeks after giving birth, since I didn’t qualify for parental leave and wasn’t at my job long enough to qualify for federal family leave. Republicans and Democrats continue to fail their constituents in the interest of capital by prohibiting workers from tending to their families.
Feb 24 - Supreme Court turns down chance to claw back abortion clinic buffer zones
The Supreme Court judges have decided not to touch the subject of bans that prevent anti-abortion activists from getting too close to women entering clinics like Planned Parenthood.
Dr. Maggie faces felony charges for providing pregnancy termination pills to women in states with sweeping abortion bans. If the governor wants to, Louisiana can continue to pursue this so that the issue is once again before the Supreme Court, this time to decide how to handle conflicts like this between states.
News Impacting Society and Children
Feb 27 - Children on NHS puberty blocker trial will only be monitored for two years
While it’s still an overall positive that children who take puberty blockers will be regularly evaluated, there is concern that two years is not nearly long enough to gauge the effects of this medication.
Feb 27 - Pentagon plans to remove transgender service members under new policy
This isn’t mean at all. Once upon a time, the US military had health standards for its servicemen and women. We don’t even have to get into the obvious mental illness that manifests as gender dysphoria - taking cross-sex hormones should preclude a person from serving because of its physical risks alone, as we know the hormone treatment significantly increases the risk of major medical events.
Feb 25 - Tech worker cannot be legally recognised as non-binary, court rules
An American man who moved to the UK attempted to be legally recognized as “non-binary,” a status that California had granted him, through legal action. Wisely, the Court dismissed his claims and instead suggested this is an issue for Parliament due to the wide-reaching consequences of recognizing that gender status on other laws.
Apparently, in this jurisdiction, schools get to have at least as much influence in a child’s life as that child’s parents. The unintended consequence of policy like this is that more parents will consider pulling their children from public schools, which has its own long-term unintended consequences on both the children themselves and society as a whole.
Feb 24 -Supreme Court declines to take up challenge to Tennessee law restricting drag shows
As a reminder, the Supreme Court is already considering a major case around bans on medical transition of children. I don’t blame the justices for not wanting to clog up their calendar with trans cases.
Feb 22 - Disciplinary records of trans doctors ‘will not be kept from the public
Originally, gender-hopping would have erased the history of a medical professional’s disciplinary records prior to the gender change. Thankfully, public outrage inspired the General Medical Council to take a more discerning approach to their policy. Unfortunately, gender-identifying information, like pronouns, will still be removed from the historical record if they don’t align with the practitioner’s chosen identity.
Beyond the West
Feb 26 - Why more Chinese women are saying no to marriage
It’s a complex issue in China that is influenced by the modern culture and historical norms of the nation. But it’s also all very familiar to women in the West: autonomy is appealing.
Feb 26 - How a film about women’s ‘invisible’ labour in marriage sparked a debate in India
The Indian film Mrs highlights the topic of domestic labor, arguing that society greatly undervalues the work of wives in a patriarchal society.
Entertainment
Maher represents the majority of the public with his skepticism of the gender ideology arguments we’ve heard 1000 times by now.
Feb 21 - Hunter Schafer Says She [sic] Received a Passport With Male Sex Marker After Trump’s Anti-Trans Executive Orders
Yes, Hunter, because you are male.
